River’s Edge Media Launches Waffle House Rules by Joe Formichella
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (Apr. 30, 2014) — Fairhope, Alabama, author Joe Formichella’s first novel, Waffle House Rules, explores small-town life in the South through the eyes of patrons of the local Waffle House. Published by River’s Edge Media, Waffle House Rules loosely centers around the life of Dr. Jimmy Ryan as he struggles to cope with the tragedy that has shadowed him for years. Ryan dedicates himself to bringing people back from the brink, driven by his own guiding principle: “Ain’t Dead Yet.” But Ryan is only one of a memorable cast of characters whose lives intersect in unexpected ways.
“I was fascinated with the notion — a John Irving kind of notion, ‘What if?’ — of lives that probably wouldn’t ever expect to collide or overlap but do at a central ‘neutral’ location, like a local café, or a Waffle House,” Formichella said in an interview. “How would that alter their story, push it forward or detour it?”
You’ll want to find out, says Bev Marshall, author of Walking through Shadows, Right as Rain, and Hot Fudge Sundae Blues. “Balancing hilarious comedy with dramatic pathos, Waffle House Rules is chock full of charming, eccentric characters,” Marshall says. “Formichella explores the absurdities of life and death as perceived by the lovable inhabitants of Fairhope and Penelope, Alabama, with great sensitivity and intelligence. This book reminded me of why I love to read.”
Formichella recently edited The Shoe Burnin’: Stories of Southern Soul, also published by River’s Edge Media. He is the prize-winning author of three nonfiction works: Here’s to you, Jackie Robinson, The Ben Jobe Story, and Murder Creek. His previous novel is The Wreck of the Twilight Limited. Formichella currently lives on the Waterhole Branch near Fairhope, Alabama.
